Hair. Honestly a love and hate relationship when it comes to mine…. It allll started at a very young age when my mom, former hairdresser used to put in those braids and pretty bows which I eventually always lost after school. Nevertheless she taught me how to take care of my hair and love it! So when I was finally able to fix my own hair at about 9 or 10 years old, I remember being super proud. The real fun came when I pressed my hair for the first time, which I now kinda regret! When you have curly hair like mine any type of heat is the enemy. I have learned that the hard way by having to cut off quite a lot of length 2 years ago. But luckily hair is just hair guys and it grows back! I haven’t been using a flat iron in 1,5 years now and I really see how my curls are coming back to life! —
Here is my hair routine for my weekly wash and go hairstyle together with the products I use and how to in just 8 steps!
Born in Paramaribo, Surinam August 9th, 1989 / South America
‘Isabella Roma Doelwijt’
My oldest sister gave me my first name, the second is my Moms, and the third is my Dads. My family’s roots are quite complex because of it’s many different ethnicities, which makes it kinda hard to explain sometimes. Being Surinamese to me almost automatically includes being mixed in some kind of way. A fun fact for example is that my grandmother, my fathers mother was of Chinese origin. —
“I don’t think I ever saw my mother more beautiful than on evenings after the beach and probably when she was in love. Evenings when we would go for a walk around the port, past the souvenir shops filled with earrings, ceramics, sarongs and headbands. That’s the woman I wanted to talk about this season. ‘La bomba’, as we say in the South.” — Simon Port Jacquemus
“Today I woke up with the reflection of my round table mirror, projected by the sun into the corner of my bedroom wall. Because of it’s rounded shape folded into the even corner, the light created a kind of surreal 3D effect. And as usual I took way too many pictures of this brief moment. I really like these kind of moments, because I know that they will never appear in that exact same way again.” —
A lovely project by Iman Whitfield featuring gorgeous pieces from LoveStories ! The video gives insight into a loving relationship from the point of view of ‘the boyfriend’. Little details, stupid things, and charming elements are the things why he’s in love with her, even when that means eating kebab, walking into metro gates, and acting out the same film scene every single day.
I am so happy to introduce you to a new monthly category on maiohwn called “Spotlights On” where I’ll be visiting lovely people who inspire me in all sorts of disciplines and take a peek in their lives! This month I would like you to meet Zinaida van Latesteijn, hardworking mom, lover, sister, daughter and friend of many. We started the day buying the most beautiful flowers on the market, picking up Chloé (daughter) from school and ate the best falafel in town at her place. It was such a productive fun day, we even cleaned out her shoe closet for her upcoming sale on Sunday 5th of October. Make sure you don’t miss it!! I’ve already seen some pretty treasures over there…

Oke.. breathe, it’s 2am while I am writing this post because I really cannot believe how it is possible for one shop to contain almost everything I have ever dreamed of! I want to cry in a corner and look at this image until the sun comes up….
A collaboration shoot by two fashion design graduate students Dennis Bareiro & Isabella Doelwijt.
“We want to create a new image for fashion that combines all sorts of disciplines in order to inspire other creatives and stimulate future collaborations.”
Both collections were created from different concepts and idealities. The men’s collection by Dennis Bareiro, called S-ET > EP -0:21:39, represents an important snapshot of a video from his childhood. A moment in which he was fully devoted to the time he lived in. The women’s collection by Isabella Doelwijt, called maiohwn, is a reflection of the spatial sense of emptiness set in balance with the invisible presence of your own visualizations.
By putting these two separate collections together they’ve created a daring image of women/menswear, pushing the idea of collaborating and achieving bigger goals by joining forces with a team of creatives.
I am so happy with these two super soft sweaters from Zara, just what I needed ! For a long time I had ignored v-neck sweaters because I really didn’t like them (especially not on men, still!). But now I think it’s kind of sexy in a subtle way on women plus I don’t get that sort of claustrophobic feeling I often get with other sweaters I own…
Soo.. I woke up this morning watching an interview, watch here with Zoe… and omg I love her glasses so much ! Anyone who knows me must know that I have a weakness for glasses, especially when they’re cat eyed ! So I went looking on the internet and yes ! I found them hahha on this website called smartbuyglasses.. My wish-list just keeps on expanding, o dear..
When I lived in Stockholm for a while I went to this perfume store called BYREDO.. and fell for this scent called Seven Veils, it reminded me of something from my past, yet my future… It smelled like the idea of me when I’m older, if that makes any sense ? So I took a sample with me (long time finished), but never got the time to go back and get the bottle. So it’s still on my wish-list as for this nice cardigan and sweater too^^
I just had to post this beautiful thing called Madeleine, an analogue odour camera… wow, the same as a camera records the light information of a visual in order to create an image, this machine records the molecular information of a smell ! So interesting and beautifully designed don’t you think ?
It’s finally here ! My very own maiohwn necklace… totally having a little “carrie” moment overhere ! hihi^^ And I am so happy to say that I may give you 10% discount on your order using the code MAIOHWN. Isn’t that great ?! Be creative and make up your own version at mijnnaamketting.nl
For some reason it always helps to get myself some nice new stationery before starting a new school year. Somehow it gives me a bit more drive and inspiration to start I guess… I got these beauty’s at an online shop called SISORIGINAL, they have a really nice selection of Moleskine products and one of my favorites Furoshiki Shiki on sale too !
Almost forgot to tell you about this fun Marni dress I found the other day ! It reminds me a bit of the dress Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Woman [the polo match scene]. I am still thinking of ways to wear it for fall though.. it’s getting way too cold already !
The perfect activity for me while i’m laying sick in bed these days… House hunting ! I can’t wait for me and my boyfriend to move in together ! We’re finally seriously doing this, and it feels great ! Been doing a lot of home inspiration on the i-net too which gives me even more butterflies. Fingers crossed now for a nice place to call our own home !^^
Yesterday night I celebrated the launch of a new Dutch Magazine called F.A.L.L. Which is founded by a friend of mine Milou Verbeke. The magazine is a mixture of Fashion Art Literature & Lifestyle and will be published 6x a year ! I absolutely love the lay-out of the magazine and I think that the concept will inspire lots of creative people to follow their dreams, maybe even with the help of F.A.L.L. Keep your eyes open for a copy of your own at the smaller book-concept stores near you !
Saw this short film on a friend of mine’s fb the other day. And I’m totally in love with it ! It’s also from the same guy who directed another film I really really like ‘Matthew Frost’ for Jalouse. Watch it here !
The last few hours of 2012, while reading all these best wishes and amazing goals I wonder if anything I wished for last year came true. I think so.. except for that billion dollar wish do… Anyway I’m not going to say my wishes and goals out loud, because then I know for sure they won’t come out. But I do wanna say that I’m grateful for every sad and happy moment 2012 gave us, a little less the sad ones of course.. but hey,
As I once read; without knowing sadness there is no experience of happiness.
It’s finally here ! Our lookbook for COM’BIN’A'BLE s/s ’13 a project I did in collaboration with Dennis Bareiro. The collection is a mix of modernism, vague memories and feelings inspired by people who are comfortable in their way of life through time. It is a story of men and women who show their passion for quality and sustainability in a unique way.
The ability of combining these aspects in a way of living is an aspiration to live by.
I have enjoyed making this collection so much and I’m so grateful for everyone who helped and stood by us throughout this amazing process.
I would like to introduce you to my latest project in collaboration with Dennis Bareiro, Sharon Jane D. & MUNKICLOUD. This is just a small preview of the collection we made, be sure to stay tuned for more !!
Say hello to my new vintage Jil Sander bag, found this one on marktplaats.nl ! The material is suede, so I don’t know if now is the right time to wear it outside with the super cold snowy/rainy weather here in Amsterdam but we’ll see !
The other day I discovered a new secondhand store nearby my house and found these two amazing items ! They are both from a really old collection from h&m, back when it was called “hennes”. Ironicly that same day I had just seen the crazy cool new spring rtw ’13 collection of Loewe, and I thought that somehow my mind was leading me to find something similar without even noticing^^
Yesterday night I had the chance to be at the press launchparty of 9straatjesonline new shopping concept called QRoute. The idea is basically to make the term window-shopping a reality ! You know when you see something really really nice in a window and you gotta have it but the store’s already closed ?! Well now there’s a solution for it ! Just install the 9straatjesonline app, scan the qr-code of the item in the window, checkout with paypal and tadaa ! Your item will be delivered the next day [worldwide]. Sounds pretty nice to me !^^
This summer I went to Paris with the bf for my birthday ! We had such a nice time there. And now with all those pretty Paris Fashionweek pics everywhere on the internet… I really want to go back so so bad !! sigh*
Say hi, to my new raincoat ^^ The skirt I’m wearing is actually made from a towel which my father uses when he’s painting ! I really loved the colors on it, so I turned it into a skirt for today’s outfit post !
I’ve been getting a lot of sweet compliments on my nails lately. So I thought let me show you guys how to do it yourself, in just three steps ! First set your nails with a transparent base coat, then apply the dots with the head of a fine needle. Let your nails dry completely and then finish it off with a new layer of transparent polish. That’s all ! enjoy.
For a long time I’ve wanted to take MAIOHWN to the next level, but somehow I never really did. Last summer however, I finally had the courage to make some decisions and start fresh! Today I’m back with the results, and I’m so, so, sooo excited to take you with me on my new adventures!
Together with Nimlog/Munkicloud I’ve built a website that will provide you with an insight into my life, the things I do and most importantly love!
For starters, you are now able toFOH.LOW MAIOHWN easily by subscribing to a personal weekly email update! Find your favorite posts viaAR-KIVE, get to know more AH’BOUT me and see my work through PORTFOLI~JO.
